Essential Oil Safety Tips

Using essential oil diffusers can make your home smell incredible, but even though these are natural products, they are also extremely potent and need to be used with caution.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when diffusing essential oils:

1. Choose Quality Oils

Quality oils do not have to be from expensive, popular MLM companies. There are many quality brands out there.

When looking at a brand/company, here are a few tips:

  • Do they have qualified, trained staff?
  • Do they show GC/MC testing on their website?
  • Are their samples third-party tested?
  • Do they specify how the oils are extracted or processed?
  • Do they give safe guidelines for dilution?
  • What is their stance on ingestion? (They should not be promoting ingestion for the untrained/unprofessional user!)

These are just a few examples of what to look for in a company.

Oftentimes people equate a higher price with better quality, but that really isn’t the best method of evaluation.

Ask the questions above and you will be able to get a more complete picture of the company and whether its products are high quality or not.

2. Always start with a low dilution

You can always add more oil if you want a stronger scent, but it’s impossible to take it away once you’ve added it.

3. Never diffuse around children, sensitive people, or pets

Some essential oils can be very harmful to children, people with allergies or asthma, and pets.

If you’re using kid or pet-safe oils, or your guests tolerate the chosen oils well, make sure you are diffusing in a well-ventilated area and only diffuse for 30-60 minute intervals. (And always keep essential oils in a place where children or pets cannot reach).

A safer option may be to choose to wear a diffuser necklace or bracelet if you want to enjoy a fall scent.

4. Do not ingest essential oils

I know that we’re talking about diffusing essential oils but inevitably, when the topic of oils comes up, there is always a discussion about internal use.

Here’s the deal…essential oils are incredibly potent, concentrated products and should not be used internally.

And it DOES NOT matter which company you buy from. Just because a company markets its products as “pure essential oils” does not mean they are safe to ingest.

Mucous membrane tissue is more delicate than skin and essential oils can actually cause erosion of these sensitive tissues.

Last Thoughts About Fall Diffuser Blends

Diffusing essential oils is a great way to make your home smell amazing and boost your health at the same time. With so many oils to choose from, there’s sure to be one (or more!) that’s perfect for you.

Just remember to use caution and follow the safety guidelines above to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
