Xylitol Nasal Spray: Effective Natural Relief For Nasal Congestion

Xylitol nasal spray, which is made with xylitol, grapefruit seed extract, and water, has been found in clinical studies to be an effective alternative for those who suffer from nasal congestion due to colds, flu, or allergies.

First developed by Dr. Lon Jones to use on his own patients for children’s ear infections, this type of nasal spray has since become an excellent treatment for nasal congestion and infections as well as improving upper respiratory health.

And here’s an interesting tidbit- it is now being studied for Covid-19 because it is natural, effective, has very few if any side effects, and is easy to deliver.

Benefits of Xylitol Nasal Spray Ingredients

So far the evidence for the efficacy of xylitol and grapeseed extract nasal spray has been positive and many I know who have tried it mention that they feel a significant reduction in symptoms.

So, let’s go over a few of the benefits in more detail…

Benefits Of Xylitol

Xylitol is a naturally occurring alcohol that has been used for over 40 years in foods and oral health products and offers many benefits for the whole body including:

  • reduction of ear infections
  • the ability to kill bacteria that can cause sinus infections
  • helps maintain a healthy pH level in the nose which can lower susceptibility to respiratory problems
  • penetrates mucus and helps keep the nasal passageway clear

and so much more!

In recent studies, xylitol was found to modulate the immune system and help reduce the severity of respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, and nasal congestion.

And adding xylitol to saline nasal sprays also seems to be more effective than just plain saline rinses for people who suffer from sinusitis, nasal congestion, and sinus pressure.

Xylitol Nasal Spray For Cold, Flu, And Allergy Symptoms

So, we have seen some of the benefits of xylitol and grapefruit seed extract, but you may be wondering how these two ingredients can help with cold, flu, and allergy symptoms.

Let’s get to that right now…

Xylitol nasal spray works to help thin and break down mucus, hydrate mucus membranes and reduce inflammation, soothe itchy irritated nasal passages, and help relieve sinus congestion.

One of the most important benefits that come with using an all-natural xylitol nasal spray is that it has very few risk factors or side effects, there is no risk for addiction, and you can find natural relief from seasonal conditions, airborne irritants, or congestion from sickness.

Another great reason to consider using fine-mist sprays that contain these natural products is that It won’t cause rebound congestion like other decongestants.

Possible Side Effects Of Xylitol Nasal Spray

While the use of a natural saline spray with these ingredients offers a completely drug-free formula, there is always the possibility of side effects.

Some have experienced slight irritation of delicate nasal tissues, and there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction to ingredients.

For most people though, a nasal spray with the addition of xylitol and grapefruit seed extract is an effective way to reduce congestion and find relief.

Important Safety Tips:

  1. Do not share nasal sprays as that could spread infection
  2. Always make sure that you start with a clean nozzle (be sure to clean it after each use!)
  3. Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs, so make sure you don’t drip any or leave tissues where they can get them
  4. As with any medication or natural remedy, keep out of reach of children

How To Use Xlear Nasal Spray

This nasal spray is easy to use to cleanse sinuses, relieve tissue inflammation and alleviate congestion.

Here’s how to get started…

First, gently blow your nose prior to using.

Even if you have a stuffy nose, it’s a good idea to try to blow your nose to get rid of any excess mucus.

Then, remove the safety cap and prime the spray bottle.

To do this depress the pump completely a few times until some of the liquid comes out.

After that, you place the nozzle directly into your nasal passage and completely depress the pump again 2-4 times while breathing in through the nose.

Do this to both nostrils.

Be sure to clean the nozzle before replacing the cap.

Homemade Xylitol Nasal Spray Recipe

Interested in trying a xylitol nasal spray but feeling more comfortable making your own?

I totally understand!

The good news is that the ingredients are easily available.

To make your own xylitol solution you will need:

Add all the ingredients to your bottle, shake well, and use a spray or two in each nostril a few times a day when needed. Don’t forget to clean the nozzle before putting the cap back on!

For optimal benefit and safety, be sure to use purified water.

Distilled water may be acceptable or you can boil your water and allow it to cool to room temperature.

Quick safety tip– When I make a homemade fine mist spray of xylitol and grapefruit seed extract or use my Nasaline rinsing syringe, I use water that has been filtered and then boil it before using.

My thought is that you can never be too careful when it comes to purifying water to put up your nose 😉
