Safety Tips For Essential Oils
Essential oils offer many health benefits, and diffuser blends can make your home smell incredible, but even though these are natural products, they are also extremely potent and need to be used with caution.
When using essential oils, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:
1. Choose Quality Oils
Quality oils do not have to be from expensive, popular MLM companies. There are many quality brands out there.
When looking at a brand/company, here are a few tips:
- Do they have qualified, trained staff?
- Do they show GC/MC testing on their website?
- Are their samples third-party tested?
- Do they specify how the oils are extracted or processed?
- Do they give safe guidelines for dilution?
- What is their stance on ingestion? (They should not be promoting ingestion for the untrained/unprofessional user!)
2. Always start with a low dilution
Keep in mind that you can always add more oil for a stronger scent, but you cannot remove it once added.
3. Avoid diffusing in areas where there are children, sensitive people, or pets
Certain essential oils can cause serious problems for children, people with allergies or asthma, and pets.
If you’re using kid or pet-safe oils, and your guest doesn’t mind the smell, make sure to diffuse in a room with good ventilation. Also, diffusing should only be done for 30-60 minute intervals. (And always keep essential oils out of reach from children or pets).
If you want to enjoy the scent of fall without risking your safety, choose to wear a diffuser necklace or bracelet instead.
4. Do not ingest or consume essential oils
When the topic of essential oils comes up, there is always a discussion about internal use. However, it is important to know that these products are incredibly potent and concentrated, and should not be used internally.
A company may market its products as “pure essential oils” but that does not mean they are safe to ingest.
Mucous membrane tissue is more delicate than skin and using essential oils can actually cause erosion of these sensitive tissues.
FAQs About Winter Diffuser Blends
Still have a few questions about diffuser blends?
I’ll try to answer a few of them here 🙂
1. What is the best diffuser for essential oils?
There are many good diffusers available. The choice really comes down to what kind of diffuser are you looking for. There are ultrasonic diffusers, nebulizers, evaporative diffusers, and heat diffusers. Each has its pros and cons so a little research may be necessary before choosing which is best for you.
2. What is the best essential oil company?
There are quite a few great companies out there. A few of my favorite companies to buy essential oils from are Florihana, Earthley Wellness, and Eden’s Garden.
3. What is the best way to store essential oils?
Essential oils should be stored in a cool, dark place. A cupboard or drawer away from any windows is ideal.
