healthy guacamole ingredients

I love this quick & easy guacamole recipe for a few reasons.

First, as I mentioned, the ingredients are fresh, wholesome, and so nourishing.

And second, there are no preservatives, fillers, or unnecessary ingredients!

If you’re ready to make a healthy snack that will leave your family asking for more, this recipe is just what you’re looking for! Let’s get to it!

Start With The Freshest Ingredients

It’s important to begin with the freshest ingredients to ensure that your homemade guacamole will have the best flavor.

If the avocado and tomatoes are not quite ripe enough the guacamole will be a little bland. Too ripe and you risk having smooshy tomatoes and overripe avocados with black spots which means you would need more than 2 for the recipe.

Also, the guacamole may not stay as fresh for as long.

Tomatoes are fairly easy to buy, just pick a nice firm but not hard (or bruised) tomato and you’re probably good to go!

But avocados can be tricky. I have a few tips that can help you though 😉

How To Choose The Perfect Avocado

When looking for an avocado that’s ripe, but not too ripe, here are three things that you can do:

  1. Look at the color
  2. Check to see if it has a stem
  3. Give it a gentle squeeze

With avocados, they usually get darker as they ripen. If it is light green it will most likely be rock hard and not even close to ripe. Dark green (or almost black looking) and it’s past its prime.

The color you are looking for is somewhere in between. Look at the avocados that are a nice emerald green.

Next, you’ll want to see if a small piece of the stem is attached. If there is and it can be taken off easily, then the avocado is ripe. If the stem is pretty stuck then the avocado is not yet ready.

Finally, give the fruit (yep, it’s considered a fruit) a gentle squeeze. If it feels firm but has a small amount of give, it’s a good one. Too hard and it’s not ripe, too soft and it’s overripe.

Picking a ripe avocado almost makes you feel like Goldilocks choosing one of the three bears’ beds, doesn’t it? 😀

Now that all of the perfect fresh ingredients have been picked, on to that recipe!

Best Way To Store Homemade Guacamole

There is quite a lot of advice out there about how to store guacamole so that it stays fresh and doesn’t turn brown, which it does seem to do fairly quickly.

There are some who say that adding lemon juice will help your guacamole retain its color. And while it does help somewhat, it also changes the flavor a little so it’s not my first choice.

Another method is to keep the avocado seed and put it in the guacamole, cover the bowl, and this is supposed to help your delicious homemade treat stay fresh. The problem is, I have never had it work :/

Last but certainly not least, let me give you the secret to storing your guacamole so that it stays beautifully green for a few days.

Water.

Yep, that’s the secret. Just put your guacamole in a bowl, pack it down with a spoon or fork, put cold water on the top, and cover it with a lid.

This method will keep your guacamole looking delicious for a few days. After that, it does tend to get a little watery, but we usually don’t have any left that long anyway.

Wondering how to eat your fresh, homemade guacamole?

In our house, the favorite ways to eat it are on veggies (carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower), tortilla chips, or even to add a little to chicken salad lettuce wraps.

No matter what you add this quick & easy guacamole to, it will be delicious!
